In mixed media, the acrylic medium serves as universal glue for almost everything: paper, cardboard, fabric, sand, and more. It is thus quite naturally, that I turned myself toward acrylic medium when I wanted to glue one of my paintings made on translucent Dura-Lar on a cradled wood panel.

The Failure

I say it to you right away: acrylic medium is not effective when it comes to glue a polyester film such as Dura-Lar on painted wood. Apparently, it works, but in reality, it’s very easy to remove it even if all the steps to glue it to wood had been done properly.

After the complete drying of the acrylic medium, I lift a corner of the artwork and with no real effort, peel it off totally. Not very effective, is not it? So what is the other option?

The List of Compatible Adhesives

So I looked for another adhesive. After searching the web, I finally found that the company manufacturing the Dura-Lar published a list of recommended adhesives for their products (look here).

Well, yes, I had not thought to look at the most obvious place from the beginning.

However, many of these adhesives are either hard to find or there is no mention on their packaging if they are acid-free or not. Since I work as much as possible with acid-free products, the task to find compatible, effective and acid-free glue was not that easy.

Super Quick Grip Adhesive Spray Krylon

I finally tried an acid-free spray adhesive from Krylon: Super Quick Grip Spray Adhesive # 47777. True to its name, this adhesive bond is very fast and leaves little room for error. It is necessary to act quickly and confidently. In addition, the product is toxic and requires precautions when using it as wearing a mask, safety glasses and gloves. According to my tests, when the glue is completely dry, the Dura-Lar is really stuck permanently.

For now, I have not tried the adhesive on large paintings, but I’m pretty sure it should work.

In summary, if you want to glue mat Dura-Lar on another surface, start with the list published by the manufacturer, do not waste time with acrylic medium and consider using the Super Quick Grip Spray Adhesive by Krylon which has worked well for me so far.

I hope this information will be helpful for you and make you save time.
