During the past two months, I continued my cold wax and oil painting experiments on matte Dura-Lar and I totally love it. The matte Dura-Lar is an acid-free polyester film (not transparent), with a beautiful frosted matte whitish translucent smooth surface.

What I Like About It

What I like about the matte Dura-Lar is its smooth surface that reminds me of the alabaster. It is a resistant film resistant to solvent, scraping, scrubbing and rough painting techniques. In addition, it is not necessary to prime it with gesso before to paint with oils. Finally, it does not warp. Wonderful!

Thin Layers of Paint

So, my summer experiments were all about the use oil paint, cold wax and alkyd medium on the translucent Dura-Lar. Because of the supple, pliable nature of the substrate, it is not possible to paint in thick layers as I did for my previous experiments on wood panels. I only went for thin layers in limited numbers.

Showing Artworks

Artworks created in this way should not need to be framed to protect the painted surface, but since the paper is a supple substrate, however, it is best to glue or mount the Dura-Lar on a harder surface to prevent the paint from cracking.

At first, I thought to show the paintings illustrating this blog post matted in a frame, but I must admit that I like the rawness feel given by the paint spots around paintings. That’s why I have not yet decided how I will present these artworks. A frame with or without glass could be a viable solution, but I think I’ll rather try to glue the paintings on wood cradled panels or perhaps on Plexiglas.

The next step will be to experiment different options to see which one I prefer. I shall come back to you about this in the coming weeks.

Thanks for your visit and see you soon,
