Today I show you photos from my oil and cold wax experimental paintings done on Dura-Lar’s matte polyester film. This is definitely a substrate that I like a lot but which also represents some challenges. One is to find the right glue to mount the paintings on wood.

Showing Art on Polyester Film

I have not yet decided on the way I will use to show the artworks from this series. I hesitate between the classic mat and frame combo or mounting the artwork on cradled wood panel. For cold wax and oil paintings on Dura-Lar, I could also choose to glue them on an acid-free hard board and put them in a frame without any glass.  Each option has its pros and cons. I still hesitate…

Mounting Tests

I did tests of collage with the translucent Dura-Lar on wood, and I can tell you that the acrylic gel medium is not enough. Seemingly it works, but if you pull a corner of the painting, it peels off easily. So I tested an acid-free spray glue from Krylon. It works well, at least for small size paintings. I still have to try that glue with bigger painting. I shall talk again about that in another blog post.

A Few Words About the Paintings

Paintings illustrating this blog post are evocation of a journey, literally as figuratively. They were created with a mixture of oil paint, cold wax medium and alkyd gel medium on a translucent polyester film from Dura-Lar (9 × 12 inches). This polyester film would be cropped to 8 × 10 inches with a mat, or cut during the mounting on cradle wood panel process. The pictures thus show you the works in the rough.
