Last May I did several experimental paintings with alcohol ink on Yupo paper to inspire me a new creative direction. Of these, two paintings particularly caught my attention and could give birth to a new series. Today, I show you “Petits mots doux” (Sweet Nothing), a painting with large surfaces lightly stained with inks.
I like the soft and sweet feel coming from this painting. The vivid colors at the upper left corner bring vigor to the painting and create a nice contrast with the subtle nuances of the stained surfaces. The simplicity of the composition lightens up the whole.
Simplicity and Ease
Despite what you might believe, simplicity in painting is not synonymous of ease. A composition or rendering looking simple, also mean that every detail is quite obvious. It is impossible to cover up a mistake, especially when working with transparent inks (here: Adirondack from Ranger).
One more Paradox
The simplicity attracts me as much as I find it difficult to master. It takes me out of my comfort zone, which is not a bad thing by the way. I aspire to the simplicity since a long time, but I dissociate from it most of the time. After all, it is not the only paradox I’m experiencing 😉
